Description

All Terrain is a lime based MicroTopping with an extremely high bond to almost all substrates. It can bond directly to ceramic tile without primer. Formulated for coating walls and floors of bathrooms, including shower cabinets, with a seamless coating having natural movements, resembling Istria honed marble.

Properties:

Resist’s water and wear when applied on floors and appropriately coated with a sealer.
Adheres to self-leveling cements on floors in high traffic as well as residential areas.
It covers tiles or similar items without any demolition work, in kitchens, bathrooms, living rooms, existing floors (i.e. without having to remove any ceramic tile).

Waterproof Coating

After completing the installation to make the coating waterproof, we recommend Endurable Concrete sealer a 2-Part Polyurethane System suitable for showers and floors. Walls that are not in a high traffic area, we have multiple options in single component sealers as well waxes in both flat and gloss.

When using 2-part systems it should remembered that due to the unique composition you cannot break down the material parts, as the hardener will speed up and it becomes unusable. Once mixed it will only be usable for 4 hours, when attempting 2 coats with one mix make sure the first coat is fully dry. It needs to be applied with a dense sponge roller or ¼” microfiber on a roller or T-bar.

Technical Details

All Terrain is a lime based high-bond multi-surface (i.e. cement, tile & non-porous materials) MicroTopping in a water-based paste dispersion.

Specific Gravity: 1.7
Viscosity: 18000 cps
Coverage Over Mesh: 1.0 – 1.2 m2 / 11-13 sq. ft / to 1 liter of material.
Over Smooth Surfaces First Coat: 1.2 – 1.5 m2 / 13-16 sq. ft / to 1 liter of material.
Second Coat: 2.2 – 2.5 m2 / 25- 28 2q ft / to 1 liter of material.

NOTE: These coverage rates can vary according to the conditions on the substrate.

Application

Surface Preparation

Make sure any ceranic tiles are well adhered to the substrate. When applied to concrete floors make sure the surface is dry. It is advisable on floors to vacuum any dust followed by a wash down removing any grease or anything that could detach the product.

Test the surface for rising damp by applying at random intervals a one-foot square piece of polythene film taped down. Leave overnight.

NOTE: If moisture is present upon removal on the reverse, the floor needs a moisture barrier to inhibit the coating from detaching from the surface. We have products will prevent dampness from affecting the MicroTopping.

Application Method

First coat of All Terrain should be applied directly from the bucket as smoothly as possible with a stainless-steel trowel. When using white or light colours use a Bianko trowel from Co.Me to prevent carbon marks on the surface. After 24 hours sanding can be done if required.

The Finishing Coat is applied with the stainless-steel trowel, wetting the leading edges to facilitate a seamless surface.

First coat over primer

Second coat same day

The finished coating dries lighter and the delicate grain of aggregate shows up.

NOTE: If a second colour is applied as a third partial coat you will get a marbled effect. Use a spritzer with water to blend a smooth film showing the undercoat as well as this third application.

Other Application Notes

  • A glaze is another alternative that can add a metallic or translucid polychromatic effect. This can be done using various tools including sponges and block brushes.
  • For shower applications over new drywall substrates we recommend using a Schluter System, which can be purchased at a tile supplier. Follow the instructions carefully to avoid cracking and water infiltration into the wall. Once this system is installed apply the MicroTopping directly on the system. No primer is required over the thin-set coating.
  • Another popular installation is behind a gas insert on an old chimney breast wall. Given that this finish resembles stone or cement it is a very practical solution. There are 2 types of inset one decorative without a heating element built in and the other generating heat into the room. The later can cause micro cracking unless certain precautions are taken. Usually as a fire precaution drywall is replaced with cement board with a nylon reinforcing mesh embedded into it, which is usually sufficient to prevent cracking. In the case this was not used the problem can be solved by adding short nylon fibers to the coating on the first application.
  • When working on walls with variations caused by drywall and tape and joint fillers it is best that a primer be applied. We recommend an aggregated quartz or blown glass bead product that will block porous surfaces AND help with the mechanical bond of the coating. (Sharktooth Promer is an ideal choice)
